Back to it!

I finally got a gym membership again, so I can go back to using my Ninja Warrior training schedule again. I am really excited about having some time in the gym again but I won’t forsake my backyard workout equipment either.

KickAssLogoYou haven’t really worked out until you’ve put together an exercise routine that has made you curse the day you were born, beg for mercy, and fear that a heart attack was imminent.  That pretty much describes what I did yesterday.  At some point two days ago I thought, “basic H.I.T. isn’t enough, I need a little something more.”  So, I thought, what if I eliminated the rest breaks and performed 3 rounds of 5-6 minutes of activity with NO rest during each round.    The idea struck me as a good one as I sat in my computer chair- I would later regret this whole line of thought.

So what was the workout?  Well, it looks simple enough on paper until you try to run through, balls to the wall style, with no rest in between. (more…)

It is no secret, this routine is kicking my butt!  Although, I must admit I am a bit of a glutton for punishment.  A perfect example, I recently switched from doing overhead shrugs with the barbell to dumbbell over the head shrugs.  Wow, what a difference.  I never expected it to be that much more difficult, but it was worth it.  (more…)

These things are harder than they look.  I’ve never used so little weight to achieve so few reps as when I do the overhead shrug.  Today I moved up from just the Olympic bar (about 40-45lbs in weight) to the Olympic bar plus two little five pound weight plates on each end.  It is almost enough to make me laugh when the partial rep, sloppy technique guys in the gym– who feel the compulsion to load the bar with tons of weight (and proper form be damned) and grunt every time they move the bar an inch– stare at me like I am from the planet pansy– population me.

Luckily, no one yet has decided to come over and educate me on how I am not lifting right.  BTW, if you’ve been to a gym for more than six months you’ve probably had some well meaning (or possibly conceited) lug nut come over and try to explain to you why you are doing a particular exercise, or even your whole workout, all wrong. My blog friend DR has put together an excellent program to help me train for Ninja Warrior.  I will be starting the program on August 25th.

The program is an excellent combination of strength and agility training along with innovative stretching exercises and unconventional workouts- examples include hoisting sandbags, rock climbing, and sledgehammer training.  Those are just some of the awesome workouts included.

I have to admit I haven’t looked forward to a workout this much in a long time.  Gone are the days of being limited to the boring traditional weight room (which is just a fraction of the program DR has designed for me).  (more…)
