Thanks to all those who stopped by and checked up on me. I just wanted to let you know I am doing well. At the moment I am suffering a miserable cold with the usual sore throat and cough- but it should pass by Saturday.

Ninja Warrior training has been going well. I have to admit to not being consistent enough with my Tuesday and Thursday training, as it is all too easy to get wrapped up in my school work. Speaking of which, I am grading all the time these days, conducting review sessions, and spending lots of time on my discussion sections. I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to teaching. I expect to get back on board with blogging come next Monday, so hang in there just a bit longer.

And since I know many of you are wondering, let me give you an update on Kane. He is doing quite well. He is now able to stand on his own for a few minutes and can walk across the room. However, he still needs help keeping his back end balanced or he just falls over to the side.

The Lord has blessed us through Kane’s doctor, since it looks like she will be able to get Kane into a medical trial of a drug that should aid in his recovery. The study includes FREE physical therapy. Yeah, I know, I am very excited!

See you guys soon.

Update: Kane…

A lazy afternoon on guard duty for a temporarily crippled dog and his none too bright best buddy. Their job- to guard the most precious person in this house.

I’ve walked Kane about 3 times today and noticed something that has me positively giddy. If I let the tops of his feet graze the grass or the smooth tile floor in our house he starts to move his legs just a little (about a 10-15 degree range of motion) back and forth as if he was walking. He still can’t put any weight on them like that- he only places weight on them when he locks them out which is happening more and more. I was so happy I brought him in and yelled for my wife to come watch. It was really cool to see him move his legs.

Also, I’ve discovered that it seems much more productive when I do his physical therapy right before I take him out for his walk. He locks out longer and moves his legs more if I’ve worked with him on his legs before we go out. No if only he would let me sleep through the night. (more…)

An Auction for Kane…

One other thing that Special Needs Dobermans does- aside from raising tax deductible donations- is special auctions on Ebay to raise funds for individual dogs.  I got some good news that Kane’s first auction is up.  Swing by and check it out and see what you think.  Our family really has been blessed to come into contact with S.N.D. (Special Needs Dobermans).

Auction for Kane

Kane showing off his shiny new harness. It is worth its weight in gold since I don't have to hunch over and cradle his back legs in my arms anymore.

Ignore for a second that this is possibly the second worst photo ever taken of me.  Trust me, you don’t want to see the worst.  Regardless, this photo depicts my new workout.  Just what is my new workout?  It is quite simple.  Attach a harness to the rear end of a 90lb dog, grab the handles, lift and carry for about 10-20 minutes 4 to 5 times a day.

Now unlike most workouts, hopefully the weight will decrease as he gets back some use of his legs.  For now though it me holding 100% of the weight of his back half 99% of the time. (more…)

The Special Needs Dobermans charity was kind enough to approve Kane for assistance with his medical bills.  This means that he is eligible to recieve tax deductible donations.

Special Needs Dobermans is a nonprofit 501(3)(c) corporation. We are able to help Dobermans and their families thanks to the generosity of people like you. Your donation to SND is tax deductible. All money donated on behalf of the Dobermans, every cent, goes towards their care. – Special Needs Dobermans

100% of the money you donate at the link below goes directly to Kane.  Even if you don’t want to or can’t donate, swign by the link below anyway to check out Kane’s special page.

Special Needs Dobermans: Support Kane

Last Night: Both of us were a bit tired after a long week.

Sorry, but blogging activities have been temporarily suspended for the weekend as I play nurse maid to my dog and simply enjoy having him back in our home.  Ever try to hold up the rear end of a 90+ dog while he pees?  Trust me, you aren’t missing out on anything.  That is the kind of thing you do out of loyalty and love.  See you again on Monday!

Well since I don’t have much time to type, I have some petting and walking and bladder expressing to do, here is a bit are some pictures of the Kane man after he got home. BTW, if you think you can help us pay for Kane’s surgery click on this link to find out more about how to give.  Even if you can only give $5 or $10 it will mean a lot.  We have already raised over $500 to go toward his medical costs- that means we’ve raised about 15% of the cost of his care and surgery.  I would love to make it to $1,000.

Perhaps I should show you his little corner.  Doctor’s orders, he has to be kept in a small area to minimize movement.

Here is another view… (more…)

He will be home by 5 p.m.  If I find enough time to drag myself away from petting him I will be posting a bunch of Kane pictures tonight.  Heck, I might even throw in some Lucius pictures too.  See you soon.

Amazing news.  Remember how yesterday I blogged about how Kane had lost deep pain sensation in one of his hind legs?  Well one of Kane’s doctors called this morning and she sounded absolutely giddy.  Apparently this morning they took him out to pee and not only did he pee on his own, he was also able to stand up on his own.  That means he has the ability to place weight on his back legs which is a tremendous jump since yesterday when he couldn’t even feel deep pain.  His progress is so significant that his doctor admitted that they were shocked by his rapid improvement in a single day’s time.  I am thankfully that the Lord has heard our prayers and answered my request that he would heal Kane in such a manner that his doctors would be amazed by his progress.  The sound of the doctor’s voice confirms that my (and our) prayer(s) were answered in a wonderful way.  (more…)

The doctor called this morning.  You know it isn’t going to be a good call when they say, “We have some good news and some bad news for you.”  Of course she told me the goods news first, and of course all I could think of was, well what is the bad news??? (more…)
