It was a great day! The A.M. session went well- aside from one funny incident I neglected to share earlier. The funny incident?  As I was sprinting I was not looking at the ground, and as a result I almost stepped on a tortuga (Spanish for turtle).  I noticed him (or her) when my foot was about 5 inches from hitting him square on his shell.  I saw him just in time to push my foot backward.  Unfortunately the repositioning of my foot propelled my upper body forward and I stumbled for several feet- darn near wiping out on my face- before I recovered my balance.  It was worth it though.  I didn’t want it on my conscience that I split the poor little guy’s shell. I was dumping the compost bin outside the other day when an idea struck me.  Nope, it wasn’t a great opening sentence for my novel.  Nope, it wasn’t a replacement for oil that is both cheap and clean.  Instead, I thought to myself, “wouldn’t it be neat if I could do a split!?”  Of course I am forced to admit that at no point in my life have I ever been able to perform a split of any kind.  So what was I to do? Brain Goals

1. Read 30 – 45 minutes a day of Spanish.

2. Work on grammar books.

3. Read 30 books for reading list and class.

So you want one of those sexy well folded and crinkled brains?  You know that ladies find the gray matter between your ears irresistible?  And ladies, you know there is nothing hotter than a woman with a well developed cerebellum.  As I used to say, when it comes to an intellectual woman I medulla oblon-GOTTA get to know her!

Well since I am no longer single that kind of reasoning doesn’t have much effect on me.  But that is fine since I was long ago convinced of the need for a well-developed brain.  Sadly that realization came after I wasted my freshman and sophomore years of college far more interested in learning how to meet women (something I was quite successful at) than in the general acquisition of knowledge.  However, thanks to a wonderful public speaking professor and the threat of academic suspension (not to mention the loss of financial aid) I got my act together and went from a less than sterling 2.3 g.p.a. to a 3.7 g.p.a. in one semester.

Aside: If only there were as big a market for brain growth pills as for erection enhancers- both would be equally useless, but at least I wouldn’t be so pessimistic about humanity. (more…)

I don’t know if I am the only one, but I absolutely-totally-understandably HATE when I hear the following words.

I love you, I’m just not in love with you.

Those words make my blood boil.  But I have to admit, when it comes to my workouts- that about covers my current relationship with exercise.  I love the idea of working out and I love the memory of past workouts, but when it comes to present workouts there is little joy top be had.  And I don’t mean to imply any sense of ease when I use the word joy.  some of my best workouts have been stomach curdling and involved severe nausea and lactic acid burning in my muscles that rivaled a four alarm fire for intensity.  And as a former fireman whose been face-to-face with extreme heat and crackling flames I can speak from experience.  My lack of passion led to a bit of mild depression about the future of my workouts- which as of late have been little more than a roughly choreographed bore fests.

That was until I happened across the Men’s Fitness Magazine website as I was doing research for another post (set to drop later this week).  On the front page there was a link to an article on an MMA fighter’s workout.  A few clicks later I was enthralled by this fast paced, intense, hard pounding exercise routine.

Ever tried anything like this? (more…)

Well the spare room is almost completely painted- the doors need a third coat of paint. With that done we can start putting together our introduction book.  What is an introduction book you might ask?  Well even if you didn’t you are about to find out.  The Introduction book is a scrapbook that showcases your family (immediate and extended), home, and neighborhood to both social workers and potential adoptive children.  It provides them a way to get to know you and your family during the initial stages of the adoption process AND it can assist social workers as they decide whether a child is a good fit for your home and family.  Moreover, it is a great way to get family involved in the adoption process (parents, grandparents, uncles, cousins, etc.).  The prospective table of contents for our Introduction book looks something like this (more…)

Seriously, do they get more adorable than this?

She is the best inspiration I could ever have to accomplish anything,

I dedicated my thesis to her and will do so with everything I publish for the rest of my days on this Earth.

A Simple Poem for my Little Princess

I take so much joy in her laughter, both loud and deep, (more…)

1. Fill up that Trash Can. Go to your refrigerator, pantry, and wherever else you hide food, and find EVERY food items that contains any of the following three ingredients:

Trans-fat, white flour (bleached, unbleached, enriched), and high fructose corn syrup.

You may also want to consider ditching foods that contain processed sugar in exchange for more natural sweeteners like evaporated cane juice. [Why is Cane Juice Better? Click Here to find out] Oh and, if at all possible, ditch the diet sodas. I mean if you absolutely MUST consume soda drink diet instead of regular, and even then limit yourself to less than one can a day.

2. Shopping. With your pantry cleared out, head on over to the grocery store and stock up. Once again avoid anything with the following ingredients:

Trans-fat, white flour (bleached, unbleached, enriched), and high fructose corn syrup.

Instead of transfat, find foods that contain healthy fats like mono- and poly-unsaturated fats. Instead of white flour, accept nothing less than 100% whole wheat flour. Instead of high fructose corn syrup how about foods containing evaporated cane juice or some other less processed sugar substitute.
