Good news, bad news, boring news, sensational news- it’s all in thousands of newspapers published in print and online daily, weekly, and monthly.  But since you can’t read them all, whatever should the aspiring mind do?  Are there some guidelines that might guide you through the avalanche of news available at the local newsstand and on the information superhighway.

Furthermore, there is more to reading and learning than newspapers right?  Of course.  There are journals, websites, blogs, etc.  So allow me to introduce you to rule #1 of the 10 Weeks to an Intellectual Transformation program and how it applies to a broad range of sources- mostly by introducing you to a broad range of sources.

I was dumping the compost bin outside the other day when an idea struck me.  Nope, it wasn’t a great opening sentence for my novel.  Nope, it wasn’t a replacement for oil that is both cheap and clean.  Instead, I thought to myself, “wouldn’t it be neat if I could do a split!?”  Of course I am forced to admit that at no point in my life have I ever been able to perform a split of any kind.  So what was I to do? Brain Goals

1. Read 30 – 45 minutes a day of Spanish.

2. Work on grammar books.

3. Read 30 books for reading list and class.

So you want one of those sexy well folded and crinkled brains?  You know that ladies find the gray matter between your ears irresistible?  And ladies, you know there is nothing hotter than a woman with a well developed cerebellum.  As I used to say, when it comes to an intellectual woman I medulla oblon-GOTTA get to know her!

Well since I am no longer single that kind of reasoning doesn’t have much effect on me.  But that is fine since I was long ago convinced of the need for a well-developed brain.  Sadly that realization came after I wasted my freshman and sophomore years of college far more interested in learning how to meet women (something I was quite successful at) than in the general acquisition of knowledge.  However, thanks to a wonderful public speaking professor and the threat of academic suspension (not to mention the loss of financial aid) I got my act together and went from a less than sterling 2.3 g.p.a. to a 3.7 g.p.a. in one semester.

Aside: If only there were as big a market for brain growth pills as for erection enhancers- both would be equally useless, but at least I wouldn’t be so pessimistic about humanity. (more…)

Click here, and give it a try.  Your recovery heart rate tells a lot more about you than your BMI ever could.  While the BMI is a lousy indicator of health (ranking anyone with either considerable height or muscle mass as either “overweight” or “obese”), your recovery heart rate is a pretty good judge of overall heart health regardless of your height, weight, or muscle tone.

All you need to do is take two heart rate measurements.  First, your heart rate IMMEDIATELY after the end of your workout.  Second, your heart rate two minutes after the first reading.  Simple enough, right?  Give it a shot, and if you don’t mind sharing post your results in the comments section.

1. Fill up that Trash Can. Go to your refrigerator, pantry, and wherever else you hide food, and find EVERY food items that contains any of the following three ingredients:

Trans-fat, white flour (bleached, unbleached, enriched), and high fructose corn syrup.

You may also want to consider ditching foods that contain processed sugar in exchange for more natural sweeteners like evaporated cane juice. [Why is Cane Juice Better? Click Here to find out] Oh and, if at all possible, ditch the diet sodas. I mean if you absolutely MUST consume soda drink diet instead of regular, and even then limit yourself to less than one can a day.

2. Shopping. With your pantry cleared out, head on over to the grocery store and stock up. Once again avoid anything with the following ingredients:

Trans-fat, white flour (bleached, unbleached, enriched), and high fructose corn syrup.

Instead of transfat, find foods that contain healthy fats like mono- and poly-unsaturated fats. Instead of white flour, accept nothing less than 100% whole wheat flour. Instead of high fructose corn syrup how about foods containing evaporated cane juice or some other less processed sugar substitute.

My wife and I hope to build our new (and final) house about three to five years from now.  So we decided this week to start stockpiling ideas to make our home both environmentally AND economically sound.  I invite, no I implore, you to add comments with links to any neat ideas- nothing is too far out.

What is my contribution to this discussion, you ask.   What about a toilet with two buttons, one button for when you do #1 the other for all your #2 needs.  Neat, eh?
