A New Goal…

While Ninja Warrior is still a ways off in the future, I found a good mid-range goal.   On April 16th, 2011 the Marine Corp base in S.C. will be hosting their annual Mud Run, and I am planning on attending.

Hoo-RAA!  this should be a good motivator to stop procrastinating and get to work.

KickAssLogoYou haven’t really worked out until you’ve put together an exercise routine that has made you curse the day you were born, beg for mercy, and fear that a heart attack was imminent.  That pretty much describes what I did yesterday.  At some point two days ago I thought, “basic H.I.T. isn’t enough, I need a little something more.”  So, I thought, what if I eliminated the rest breaks and performed 3 rounds of 5-6 minutes of activity with NO rest during each round.    The idea struck me as a good one as I sat in my computer chair- I would later regret this whole line of thought.

So what was the workout?  Well, it looks simple enough on paper until you try to run through, balls to the wall style, with no rest in between. (more…)

May 25th:  This was my first day of getting back to physical training, and my last day of undisciplined eating.  The day started with a 30 minute workout but closed with a triple scoop waffle cone.

Resistance Training: performed as a circuit (one set of each exercise all the way through and then repeat).

1. Squats with Tire Press. A basic squat with one side of the tire resting in the palms of the hands. At the top of the movement press the tire hard enough to push it about a foot or more, then let it fall back into the palms of the hands and return to the basic squat position. 2 sets of 12 reps. Perhaps they should give that acronym a rethink?!

The F.A.T. (Funny Acronym Tuesday) challenge is back.  Yeah, I know last weak I was a bit forgetful.  And yes, I know I still haven’t posted a winner from last week.  But I will get around to that on Wednesday.  For now let us just enjoy today and the current F.A.T. challenge.

Your first acronym is…

I.N.T.U.I.T.I.O.N.

RooBabs has posted an abs challenge on her blog, so I figured I would take her up on it.  Here are some before pictures I took today.  As you can see not much has changed since my best pictures about a year ago.

And of course the ab close-up.  Warning: there is no six pack ahead… (more…)

In order to better understand where you are headed it often helps to see where you have been. Throughout this fitness journey I’ve been through a lot.  I went from my highest weight ever of 206lbs to my lowest weight in almost a decade of 166lbs.  I’ve grown stronger, improved my endurance, pushed through obstacles, and made quite a few mistakes.  Looking ahead I benefit from the knowledge that while I’ve grown a lot there is still a tremendous amount of room for improvement.

I have to begin training specifically for Ninja Warrior; I have to eat cleaner (less refined sugars and snacks); and I have to ramp up the intensity of my training sessions 100 percent!

But before we get into all that perhaps it would be helpful to see where I’ve been over the last year and a half.

I started out on February 8th, 2007 @ 206lbs and with a higher body fat percentage than I care to admit.

As disheartening as it was to see how I had let myself go, I was glad to have visual confirmation of my own failings when it came to living a healthy lifestyle.  How did I get there? For me it was two things- too much soda and NO portion control.  I look back and remember some meals where I had thirds on a full size 11 inch plate. (more…)

As many of you might already know, I’ve got a real tendency to procrastinate.  I have to make a deliberate effort at self-discipline to keep myself on the ball.  It is part a problem that my mind constantly seeks new puzzles to solve and loses interest once I figure out the solution- even if I haven’t fully implemented that solution.  Some tasks, like learning a new language, bore me to tears.  But these are things I must do.  My to do list for this summer includes:

  1. Learn Spanish: To develop a fluency in reading the language NOT speaking it.
  2. Research: I would like to have a paper ready for publication by December 2008/January 2009 (more…)

Well Kane has kept me close to his bed side for the last few days grounding my workouts and runs.  However, starting tomorrow that can change.  While Kane still isn’t mobile he is a bit less whiny- no doubt because his pain is lessening as his body heals.  So with him able to allow me some personal time mor ethan three feet from his bed that means I have a lot of catching up to do since it is Tuesday and I have three resistance training session and at least three runs to fit into my schedule.  As a result I will do some doubling up.

My schedule for the next few days includes an early morning session of stretching:

Neck/Trapezius Stretch (seen to the left; do in all four directions); Wrist Stretch (seen to the left; do in two positions- palm facing body and knuckles facing body);Seated Hamstring Stretch; Bent-Knee Forward; Bridging; Pat the Back; Seated Side Straddle; Back Straight Leg Extension; Back Curl to Extension; Spinal Twist

Each stretch is done twice for 30-45 seconds each with a few seconds rest in between. (more…)

Well it is that time of week again- Tuesday.  Usually a day known for only being one day better than Monday, but on longer.  Funny Acronym Tuesdays have turned everyone’s second least favorite day of the week (especially now that Hell’s Kitchen has finished for the season) into the happening place to be.  For those who haven’t played before, the rules are quite simple.  Each person who comments defines the acronym posted by the person who commented before them and then writes an acronym of their own for the next person to explain.  Feel free to make your acronyms dark, corny, odd, quirky or whatever. Just have fun!

What can you win?  A write up of your blog posted on here so you get some extra traffic and some bonus Technorati points- for all of you who are interested in that thing.  But there are also immediate benefits too, like a good laugh and some friendly banter.  Let’s see if we can break 1,001 hits in one day (last week’s record).

The first acronym is

E.U.T.H.A.N.A.S.I.A.  (more…)
