May 25th:  This was my first day of getting back to physical training, and my last day of undisciplined eating.  The day started with a 30 minute workout but closed with a triple scoop waffle cone.

Resistance Training: performed as a circuit (one set of each exercise all the way through and then repeat).

1. Squats with Tire Press. A basic squat with one side of the tire resting in the palms of the hands. At the top of the movement press the tire hard enough to push it about a foot or more, then let it fall back into the palms of the hands and return to the basic squat position. 2 sets of 12 reps. I found this wonderful little toy over at Amazon.com, it is a Powermax sprint sled:

Looks fun, doesn’t it?  That is exactly what I thought.  But the price tag made my jaw drop- $249.95.

So my first thought, aside from selling plasma in order to get my hands on this toy, was how could I build this myself.  I have a pretty good idea.

If you answered yes to any of the above questions I have a few ideas for you.  Some are relatively simple to implement and others will require you to go out and get some workout tools.  The necessary equipment ranges from a medicine ball to a tractor tire and a sledgehammer.  As a companion to this post I will be posting some pet projects of my own over the next few weeks.  The first of which will be a weighted sled with a harness.  Since I am pressed for time and this is an introductory post, this post will provide some video links to get you started thinking about some unconventional workouts

Well Kane has kept me close to his bed side for the last few days grounding my workouts and runs.  However, starting tomorrow that can change.  While Kane still isn’t mobile he is a bit less whiny- no doubt because his pain is lessening as his body heals.  So with him able to allow me some personal time mor ethan three feet from his bed that means I have a lot of catching up to do since it is Tuesday and I have three resistance training session and at least three runs to fit into my schedule.  As a result I will do some doubling up.

My schedule for the next few days includes an early morning session of stretching:

Neck/Trapezius Stretch (seen to the left; do in all four directions); Wrist Stretch (seen to the left; do in two positions- palm facing body and knuckles facing body);Seated Hamstring Stretch; Bent-Knee Forward; Bridging; Pat the Back; Seated Side Straddle; Back Straight Leg Extension; Back Curl to Extension; Spinal Twist

Each stretch is done twice for 30-45 seconds each with a few seconds rest in between. (more…)

My Morning Run

It felt great getting back out there!  It felt like the first time in a week that I’ve been able to clear my head, get lost in something, and just focus on something other than money or my poor boy Kane.  It was also the last time that my run will not involve me leaving my house and seeing Kane in his little corner, unable to walk, and knowing he can’t go running with ever again.  No doubt for the next few weeks my run will begin with a bit of sadness as that realization repeatedly strikes me each time I walk out the door.  I am also pretty sure he won’t enjoy it either since he loved our runs so much.  Mostly he loved picking fights with the neighborhood dogs along the way.  I can say one thing though, when he was running with me the neighborhood dogs didn’t try to sniff at my heels- he took care of that.  I will miss his company on my runs. I guess Lucius will have to start running with me, but if Kane sees that he will be REALLY angry.  (more…)

As all of you know I’ve dealt with some pretty difficult problems ever since this Sunday.  Between my beloved dog going from fully mobile to paralyzed in a matter of a few minutes to a major car repair in progress, this week hasn’t been easy on my head, my heart, or my wallet. [For those want more info: my car in the shop for a pretty major repair: heater core replacement].  Dealing with these issues really knocked me off my game so to speak.

We spent Sunday night at the Animal hospital until a half hour pas midnight- none of us has fully recovered from the combination of stress and a lack of sleep.  I probably could have started working out again on Monday but I am still carrying a feeling I can’t fully describe.  It feels like my head is in a dense fog and I just can’t seem to walk through it and find a sunny sky (or even a cloudy one that is at least cloud free).

It was just today that I confronted the question, how do I get out of this funk? (more…)

Well it was bound to happen.  Today was the day when my run was all pain and no runner’s high.

It started out fine- despite having to run back in the house to get a towel so I wouldn’t repeat my mistake from earlier this week.  However, something felt wrong when about 20 minutes in I still felt the same as I felt when I first started running.  But sadly, that is how the whole run felt from start to finish.

Regardless of the pain, which I managed to push through, I did break some personal records. (more…)
