It is delicious, thirst quenching, nutrient dense, and now it is also labeled as a natural Viagra.  What is this miraculous food?  Abromosia?  Close, it is watermelon.  The delicious deep red fruit has a whole host of nutritious benefits, tastes 1,000 times better than broccoli, and now, according to Texas A & M’s Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center some compounds found in watermelons:

“[perform] the same basic effect that Viagra has, to treat erectile dysfunction and maybe even prevent it.”

Moreover, Dr. Bhimu Patil went on to state that, “it’s [watermelon] a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side-effects”

Sounds like it makes for a great pre-run, pre-workout snack.

Add to these new benefits the long recognized health benefits of watermelons (listed below) and it is probably worth designating the delicious fruit as a totally awesome super food.

Health Benefits of Watermelon; Tips on Knowing a Good Melon when you see it.

Watermelon is 92% water by weight- This means it delivers a light caloric punch allowing you to eat more [1].

“Watermelon is an excellent source of vitamin C and vitamin A, with one serving containing 14.59 mg of vitamin C and 556.32 IU of vitamin A. Watermelon also provides significant amounts of vitamin B6 and vitamin B1, as well as the minerals potassium and magnesium.” [2].

Watermelon contains Arginine which “helps the urea cycle by removing ammonia and other toxic compounds from our bodies.” [3].

“[The] deep red varieties of watermelon have displaced the tomato as the lycopene king, Patil said. Almost 92 percent of watermelon is water, but the remaining 8 percent is loaded with lycopene, an anti-oxidant that protects the human heart, prostate and skin health.” [4].

“This delectable thirst-quencher may also help quench the inflammation that contributes to conditions like asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis.” [5].

um. so. i was always told to avoid watermelon for it has too much sugar. i dont avoid it. in fact, i cut up one yesterday and ive had it for nearly all my meals since!

so this is good info TT! thanks!

  2. “i was always told to avoid watermelon for it has too much sugar”

Unless you are planning to eat a whole watermelon I wouldn’t worry. 1 cup of diced watermelon has only 48 calories- much of which are natural unrefined sugars.

And if you can’t take my word for it, check this out…

“A 2-cup serving of watermelon has only 100 calories. However, as a result of its high water content, watermelon is quite filling. Because of these qualities, Weight Watchers named watermelon its Pick of the Season Product Item this spring.”

It does sound like a good pre-run snack.

HA! I didn’t believe you, but you did it. Let me know if it generates any activity!

  5. Um, which do you mean Judi..the watermelon or the post? [Sorry, couldn’t resist that one].

  6. Teresa says:

I did this one last week. It was good for a couple of laughs.

  7. Bragging about beating me to the punch, eh? HA!

Haha, I had read this in the newspaper over the weekend – I showed it to my husband!

  9. “Haha, I had read this in the newspaper over the weekend – I showed it to my husband!”

Although us husbands can often be a dense and unresponsive group, news like this is bound to catch our attention.

  10. Randy says:

I saw this and decided to enjoy a little extra watermelon on the fourth. It’s always been one of my favorite fruits, now it’s moved up a notch or two…

  11. This is just what men need – more ways to get aroused. Because, ya know, men never get aroused and want to have sex. Never.

  12. “This is just what men need – more ways to get aroused. Because, ya know, men never get aroused and want to have sex. Never.”

Indeed. That is exactly….HEY! Are you being facetious?

  13. I haven’t dated in years because men simply cannot get it through their heads that I am not on this earth to function as their unpaid prostitute. The other day, an article came out about how older women dislike Viagra – it increases male ability, and, often, desire, but does nothing for women. It’s pretty clear that a lot of people simply do not understand that intimacy involves two people, and increasing the desire of only one of those people is not healthy.

Or maybe there’s a shred of a homeless romantic in me….

  14. “It’s pretty clear that a lot of people simply do not understand that intimacy involves two people, and increasing the desire of only one of those people is not healthy.”

I think I know what you mean. Perhaps there is a libido enhancing fruit for women?

Seriously though, from what I’ve read many men are plagued by E.D. which keeps them from being able to satisfy their wife’s desires. Now of course there are those who simply expect or want more sex than their partner. But there are many relationships where that isn’t the case and both partners want the same level of sexual activity but certain body parts won’t comply or get with the program. That is where something like this might be very helpful.

  15. HAHAHA!!!!!

    watermelon? unbelievable!!!

  16. Stiletto says:

    ‘watermelon? unbelievable!!!’

Wow, if this was a different kind of blog I’d totally be politically not correct here!

‘I think I know what you mean. Perhaps there is a libido enhancing fruit for women?’

One of my Asian hairdressers clued me in on pomegranate! She said it helps women with dryness issues. Perhaps an ancient Chinese secret? I told my boyfriend about it and we always smile when we walk past a fruit stand 🙂

  17. “‘watermelon? unbelievable!!!’”

By the way, much of the nutrient that does the…uh, job…is in the rind. So find a way to juice the rind and you should be doing great. HA!

  18. Antoinette M says:

Didn’t know that water lemon serves as a natural Viagra. This is what a man just needs! I “ll share this information with my boy friend.

  19. Stiletto says:

I would just dump the boyfriend but you’re probably not shallow like that.

  20. Wallace Rios says:

I totally agree with water melon and its components. I have been working as a personal trainer for the past 15 years and I believe that nutrition is one of the most important part of a better and healthier life style. Water melon is the surest way of getting your man up and Bouncing. I have written a book called Sexyballs: The Ultimate Guide to Sex on a Fitness Ball. The combination of Sex and Exercise and water melon makes any woman bounce on & bounce off. Sexyballs was created to give couples around the globe a bit more incentive when sexercising on a Fitness ball.
