Okay, I was watching G4 network’s Ninja Warrior show- an excellent show- and I got the idea to build a fitness course in my backyard.  This is rather impulsive I know.  But I think I am actually going to do it.

When I do (notice I didn’t say if) I will post pics and updates on the backyard gym.  Wish me luck.

My wife turned our tennis court into an outdoor gym. It’s pretty cool. She runs laps around it, then users her swiss ball for crunches, has her dumbells out there and use concrete blocks to make a stair stepper.

  4. Thanks for giving me some more good ideas WC. I was thinking along the lines of chin-up bar, dip bar, rope climb, etc. Ever seen Ninja Warrior? The show is excellent.

I haven’t seen NW, haven’t even heard of it.

When I was a kid we had monkey bars made out of steel plumbing pipe. I wonder if you could build a combo chin-up, dip, rope support from something like that. Though I wonder if it wouldn’t be cheaper just to buy a squat rack.

I used to have my own equipment–mostly a bench, lat pull attachment and leg curl attachment–but I eventually opted for a gym membership. That’s not available everywhere, but I like getting out of the house and having just about every kind of equipment out there available.

My redhead feels just the opposite—she loves working out at home.

  6. The in home gym won’t work- no space.

The gym membership doesn’t work- our local gym is a rat hole (it actually has holes in the wall).

Hence the whole outdoors idea. I am thinking along the lines of large wood beams with lead pipe running through drilled holes- at least for the chin up bar and the dip bar.

I also watched the video on youtube about how the guys from “300” trained for the movie and it gave me some great ideas. Check it out, it is a really neat workout.

I checked out the “300 Workout” .. WOW is all I can say .. I can’t wait to see how you set up your backyard gym. Any idea when it’ll be ready (eagerly awaiting pix:) Best of luck with it!! I’m also an ‘at-home workout person’ so any tips are greatly appreciated!!

  8. Thanks. I will be sure to post.
