Day Eight

Nothing much to report. I have some cardio planned for today and I shouldn’t have many problems sticking to my nutritional plan. I just wish it wasn’t so cold out so I could go run!

The First Virtue- Charity

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:16-18.

“Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, ‘Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” James 2:15-17

Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land.” Deuteronomy 15:10-11

What do all these verse have in common? They are all admonitions commanding charitable giving by the individual believer. Each is grounded in different reasons. John commands charity as a sign of love in “action and in truth,” while James displays that charity is intertwined with faith and the Christian’s spiritual regeneration (those who are reborn in Christ should display a charitable attitude toward those in need). Lastly, God charges us not only to “give generously,” but to give “without a grudging heart.” In addition God attaches a promise to “bless you in all your work.”
